What is Neurosurgery?

Neurosurgeons are doctors with years of advanced training to treat disorders of the head, neck, brain and spine. And today, they offer more hope than ever before to patients and their families by combining that knowledge with the latest technologies and advancements in medicine.

“The brain, spinal cord and nervous system are extremely complex: they impact your every thought as well as every function of your body,” says Dr. Dailey, who specializes in intracranial and spine care that ranges from the simplest of cases to the most advanced. “That's why we use a whole-person approach to your care — and why we work together across our health system to ensure we address every aspect of your health.”

If you have an emergency, such as a stroke or aneurysm, you may get care right away from a neurosurgeon. If your primary care doctor suspects a disorder affecting your brain, neck or spinal cord, however, you’ll likely be referred to a neurologist first for evaluation and diagnosis. But if you need more than medication, condition management and therapy, your neurologist may also refer you to a neurosurgeon.

Brain and Spine Conditions We Treat

Expert neurosurgeons at AdventHealth treat these and other issues:

  • Aneurysms
  • Blocked arteries
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Chronic pain in the back and neck
  • Congenital brain and spine conditions
  • Herniated discs
  • Neurological diseases, such as Parkinson’s
  • Peripheral nerve disorders
  • Tumors in the brain or spinal cord

Neurological Treatments

The types of surgeries offered include endoscopic brain operations, craniotomy, spine surgery and peripheral nerve surgery. And whenever possible, we’ll use minimally invasive techniques to ensure extreme accuracy while making recovery easier and faster for you.

But despite the name, neurosurgeons also use non-surgical treatment methods, particularly for pain management. This includes treating herniated discs and other spine conditions, joint pain and radiating nerve pain such as sciatica.

Help When and Where You Need It

“We’re doing work we love. Work that has a profound effect on people’s lives,” Dr. Dailey says. “The ability to have a positive impact on someone’s life is why we do it. Saving a life — or improving a person’s quality of life — is highly rewarding to us.”
