Think It’s Strep? Get Fast Relief With the Right Treatment
It starts as a scratchy throat. Then it’s painful to swallow, your body aches and your head throbs. You know this might be more than a simple sore throat (pharyngitis). Could it be Strep? If so, what next?
When you visit an AdventHealth Centra Care for Strep testing and treatment, there are no long waits and no guesswork — just answers and treatment when you need them. Walk in or reserve a time online to get relief.
What Is Strep Throat?
Strep throat (Streptococcal pharyngitis) is more than an everyday sore throat; it’s a bacterial infection caused by Group A Streptococcus. It’s highly contagious, can survive on shared surfaces and spreads easily through close contact. It often moves quickly through classrooms, households and workplaces.
Common symptoms include:
- A sudden and severe pain in the back of your throat
- Difficulty swallowing
- Fever
- Red, swollen tonsils
- Swollen glands or lymph nodes in the neck
- White patches or streaks on the tonsils
But not every sore throat is Strep. Many viral infections cause similar symptoms, but a rapid Strep test ensures you get the right treatment and avoid complications down the line.
| Symptom | Strep Throat | Viral Sore Throat |
|---|---|---|
| Fever | Common | Sometimes |
| Cough | Rare | Common |
| White patches | Often | Sometimes |
| Swollen lymph nodes | Common | Less common |
What Happens If You Don’t Get Treatment?
Without treatment, the Streptococcus bacteria can live in your throat, and you may remain contagious for weeks. Taking antibiotics will relieve your symptoms and help protect your long-term health by greatly reducing the risk of complications from an untreated infection.
Without treatment, your symptoms could improve, but you also risk complications such as:
- Ear infections
- Peritonsillar abscesses, which are painful infections near your tonsils
- Post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis or kidney inflammation
- Rheumatic fever, which is inflammation around the heart and joints
Some of these complications are rare, but they can be prevented with proper treatment.
| Timeframe | What Can Happen | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1 to 3 | Throat pain and fever may worsen | The infection continues to spread |
| 1 to 3 weeks | Risk of complications like rheumatic fever | Can affect the heart, joints or nervous system |
| Weeks later | Post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (kidney inflammation) | May cause swelling, dark urine or fatigue |
| Ongoing | Bacteria can remain in the body without treatment | Increases the risk of future flare-ups or complications |
Do You Need Medicine for Strep Throat?
If your health care provider confirms you have Strep, antibiotics are the standard and most effective treatment.
Antibiotics not only help you feel better, but they also help prevent rare but serious complications that can affect your heart, kidneys or joints, as well as reduce how long you’re contagious and reduce the duration of your symptoms. Most people start feeling better within a day or two of starting antibiotics, bringing relief after days of Strep throat pain.
Our urgent care clinics offer rapid Strep testing so you can get answers in minutes and start feeling better sooner. At AdventHealth Centra Care, we care for more than your symptoms — supporting your comfort, recovery and peace of mind.
Antibiotics Are the First Line of Defense
If a throat culture confirms your illness is Strep, your provider will prescribe an antibiotic to clear it. The most prescribed antibiotics for Strep throat include amoxicillin or penicillin, which can be used for both children and adults. If you have a penicillin allergy, alternatives like azithromycin or cephalexin may be recommended.
Most antibiotics are prescribed for a 10-day course, and it’s important to finish all doses, even after your symptoms improve. Stopping the course early can allow bacteria to remain and increase the risk of life-threatening complications. Finishing the meds ensures the infection is fully treated and cleared.
If swallowing pills is difficult or your symptoms are more severe, you may be offered a one-time antibiotic injection. This is especially helpful for those who have significant throat swelling. At AdventHealth Centra Care, our urgent care providers will walk you through the best option for you or your child.
Over-the-Counter Medicines for Strep Throat Symptoms
Over-the-counter (OTC) medications can make you more comfortable, but they aren’t a cure. OTC options work best alongside antibiotics, not in place of them.
Helpful OTC options include:
- Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin) to reduce throat pain or fever
- Throat lozenges or sprays for temporary relief
- Warm saltwater gargles to reduce irritation
When to Get a Strep Test
Strep throat is common in young and school-age children, but adults can come down with it too. It’s difficult to tell by symptoms alone whether your sore throat is viral or Strep.
But some tell-tale symptoms raise suspicion for Strep diagnosis, including:
- Absence of cough
- Sore throat and fever
- Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
- White or red spots or streaks in the back of your throat, around your tonsillar area
If you or your child has these symptoms, it’s a good idea to get tested rather than waiting it out. Our AdventHealth Centra Care urgent care clinics offer rapid Strep testing for all ages, so you can get answers and start treatment the same day.
How Long Does It Take to Feel Better After Treatment?
Most people begin to feel better within one to two days of starting antibiotics. Fever goes down, and swallowing becomes less painful. It can take up to a week to fully recover, but you’re usually no longer contagious after 24 hours on antibiotics.
During recovery, you should:
- Continue monitoring symptoms
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Eat soft foods
- Finish all prescribed medication
- Rest
- Use a humidifier to keep your throat moist
Strep Throat in Children: What Parents Should Know
There’s nothing worse than when your kid is sick, especially if they can’t tell you what’s wrong. Children aren’t always able to describe their symptoms the way adults can. Instead of simply saying their throat hurts, their symptoms may appear as crankiness, restlessness, refusing to eat or drink and struggling to sleep.
If you suspect your child has a Strep infection and they have symptoms such as fever, difficulty swallowing or visible white patches in their throat, get them tested. Not only do we provide onsite Strep testing, including throat swabs and throat cultures, but some of our Florida locations can also fill prescriptions onsite, saving you an extra stop at the pharmacy.
