How an EKG and Sports Physical at Urgent Care Protects Student Athletes

Student athletes have a lot to juggle — academics, game days, training and time to be a regular teen. What they shouldn’t have on their minds is whether an undetected heart condition could show up like an unwanted opponent on the court or the field.

In 2025, Florida passed legislation that looks to protect kids who play high school sports with one simple change: students must now complete an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) screening before participating in school sports.

At AdventHealth Centra Care, our commitment to whole-person, convenient care means we’re ready to help student athletes get ready for a new season.

What Florida’s “Second Chance Act” Means for Student Athletes and How Urgent Care Can Help

The “Second Chance Act” introduces an important change: beginning with the 2026-27 school year, student athletes in Florida must receive an EKG prior to participating in high school sports.

Many heart conditions in young athletes don’t present symptoms, which means even healthy, active teens can be at risk. While rare, sudden cardiac death is the leading cause of non-traumatic death among young athletes. But research shows EKGs can help identify a significant portion of conditions linked to sudden cardiac events, offering a critical opportunity for early intervention.

More than just another box to check, this quick, noninvasive test could protect your child’s future.

With this new law, families will see changes in the requirements for participating in high school sports.

In addition to a standard sports physical, student athletes will now need:

  • An EKG screening prior to participation
  • Follow-up evaluation if results are abnormal
  • Medical clearance before returning to play

If an EKG shows a potential concern, students must receive written clearance from a qualified medical professional before participating in sports.

There are also a few exceptions, including religious objections or medical exemptions, but the goal remains the same: early detection and prevention.

How AdventHealth Centra Care Supports Student Athletes’ Whole Health

Life doesn’t slow down for paperwork or appointments. Our walk-in urgent care clinics make it easy to get the care your child needs, all on your schedule. And not only do we offer comprehensive school and sports physicals, but we can also guide you through new requirements like EKG screenings. We support your child’s whole health so they can thrive in the classroom and on the field.

During the visit, your child’s provider can evaluate their overall well-being with:

  • Vital sign checks, including heart rate, blood pressure and temperature
  • Vision and hearing screenings to catch issues that could affect learning or focus
  • A full physical exam to identify any underlying concerns early

These exams establish a clear picture of your child’s health today and create a baseline for the future. They can also receive any necessary vaccinations and screenings required for sports participation, such as an EKG.

But these visits go beyond physical health; we look at your student as a whole person in mind and spirit as well.

Providers take time to talk with families about:

  • Sleep habits and daily routines
  • Stress and emotional well-being
  • Healthy choices that support focus, mood and energy

Because when kids feel their best physically and emotionally, they’re better prepared to succeed in every area of life. And better yet, everything can often be done in one visit, saving you time and giving you peace of mind.

If something unexpected comes up during a physical, whether it’s a heart concern, an injury or a needed follow-up, we’ll guide you to the next steps, including any labs, X-rays or referrals to specialists. When you’re here, you’re never navigating your child’s health alone.

How far in advance should my child get an EKG?

It’s best to get the electrocardiogram well before the season starts. EKG screenings completed within two years of the 2026–2027 school year will count toward the new requirement, so families can plan ahead and avoid last-minute delays.

What happens if an EKG shows an abnormal result?

If an EKG detects a potential issue, the student athlete must receive additional evaluation and written medical clearance before returning to play. This step helps prevent serious cardiac events during sports.

Is there a difference between an EKG and an ECG?

No. EKG and ECG refer to the same test. ECG stands for electrocardiogram (the English abbreviation), while EKG comes from the German spelling, elektrokardiogramm. The test measures the heart’s electrical activity and is used to screen for underlying cardiac conditions in student athletes.

Is an EKG included in a standard physical?

Not always. A traditional physical focuses on general health and medical history, but it may not detect hidden heart conditions. EKGs provide a deeper look at the heart’s electrical activity and can identify issues that a physical alone might miss.

Helping Your Child Play With Confidence

This new law reflects a growing understanding: protecting young athletes starts before the game begins. A sports physical is an opportunity to protect your child’s health, support their development and catch concerns early.

At our AdventHealth Centra Care urgent care clinics, we’re here to make that process simple, compassionate and centered on what matters most: helping your child feel whole. Because when your child is healthy, confident and supported, they’re ready for whatever comes next.

If you need a sports physical or have questions about EKG requirements, visit your nearest AdventHealth Centra Care to get your child ready for the season and a bright future ahead.
