Spring sports season is in full swing and that can often bring an increase in sports-related accidents, in particular head injuries. These can range from a minor bump on the head to a skull fracture and over the past week AdventHealth Centra Care physicians reported an increase in head trauma.

Mild head injuries are pretty common and can be treated at home but anytime you hit your head, it should be taken seriously. Knowing the symptoms of a major injury can help reduce any further complications. Head to the doctor right away if you or your child experience any of these symptoms:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Balance or coordination issues
  • Vomiting
  • Inability to focus the eyes
  • Abnormal eye movements
  • Persistent headache that worsens over time
  • Memory loss
  • Clear fluid coming from ears or nose

It's important to know that the symptoms don't always appear immediately. Sometimes, a person may display these signs days or weeks following the injury.

Prevent serious head injury by:

  • Wearing your seat belt
  • Wearing a helmet and other protective gear
  • Following safety precautions when playing contact sports
