With cases of the flu already showing up in our area, it's a great time to teach your kids about how to prevent the spread of germs. Germs and bacteria are EVERYWHERE, from our cell phones to the money we touch. You might be surprised to know that a study out of the University of Arizona shows that most cell phones have thousands of germs on them, even more than a toilet seat! Keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Many diseases and conditions are spread by not washing hands with soap and clean, running water.

You can help yourself and your loved ones stay healthy by washing your hands often, especially during these key times when you are likely to get and spread germs:

  • Before, during, and after preparing food
  • Before eating food
  • Before and after caring for someone at home who is sick with vomiting or diarrhea
  • Before and after treating a cut or wound
  • After using the toilet
  • After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet
  • After blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing
  • After touching an animal, animal feed or animal waste
  • After handling pet food or pet treats
  • After touching garbage
