Know These Fall-Weather Illnesses

If you’re feeling under the weather this fall, know that we’re ready to help you get better fast.

Sniffles Are Now in Season

Coughs and sneezes are a sure sign of fall. Our Centra Care physicians often help families find relief from the different ailments that often pop up this time of year, like:

  • Common colds: Cold viruses are shared more easily as we spend more time indoors. Rest, fluids and over-the-counter medications like saline nasal spray can ease your symptoms, which should clear up within 10 days.
  • Seasonal allergies: Ragweed, mold from decaying leaves and other allergens may lead to sneezing, a runny nose or other symptoms. A physician can evaluate you and offer treatment suggestions.
  • Sinus infections: Colds and allergies can both lead to sinus infections, which may cause symptoms including coughing, fever, sinus pressure, stuffy nose and sore throat. A physician can tell you whether an antibiotic might help clear things up.

The symptoms of these illnesses also overlap with those caused by COVID-19, so remember to test when needed to protect yourself and others.

Watch Out for Bugs Brought Home

When kids head home from school and daycare, they might also be bringing a couple of common school-aged illnesses, like:

  • Lice: Head lice are a commonly occurring (and easily shared) classroom nuisance. Fortunately, physicians can prescribe medication to treat it.
  • Pink eye: Conjunctivitis, or pink eye, can be caused by bacteria, viruses or allergies, and may cause red, itchy or crusty eyes. A doctor can let you know what might be causing the problem and if eyedrops could help.
  • Stomach bug: Abdominal pain, diarrhea, low-grade fever, nausea and vomiting may be signs of gastroenteritis, or a stomach bug. The symptoms usually resolve on their own but see a doctor if you need help staying hydrated.

No matter what ails you, we’re always nearby this fall — even on weekends — to help you and your family get back to feeling better.
