How to Ease Seasonal Allergy Symptoms
Just when cold and flu season seems to be winding down, we start sniffling for a different reason: seasonal allergies. But they don’t have to make your days miserable. Here’s how to find relief with at-home or over-the-counter solutions.
If you’re not able to find relief with changes like these, we can help. Our allergy experts are here to evaluate your symptoms and talk through your treatment options, so you can get back to enjoying the season.
4 At-Home Tips to Breathe Easier
Small changes around your home or to your daily habits may help reduce seasonal allergy symptoms, including:
- Changing your indoor air filters: Using high-efficiency filters and replacing them regularly can reduce airborne allergens.
- Keeping a clean routine: Vacuuming carpets weekly and washing bedding in hot water may help manage allergens.
- Trying an air purifier: Placing an air purifier in your home, especially in the bedroom where you sleep, could help reduce your symptoms.
- Using a saline nasal spray or nasal irrigation: Using a saline, or saltwater, solution to rinse your nasal passages can loosen mucus in your nose and relieve congestion.
Allergy Treatments for Lasting Relief
There are also medications and treatments that can ease your body’s response to allergens or help with specific symptoms. They include:
- Allergy shots: Your doctor might recommend allergy shots if you regularly come into contact with something that causes a strong allergic response.
- Antihistamines: These medications help ease allergy symptoms like sneezing, congestion and runny nose.
- Steroid and decongestant nasal sprays: Steroid nasal sprays are effective for allergic rhinitis (hay fever). Decongestant nasal sprays reduce swelling to make it easier to breathe through your nose.
