What to Expect During a Sports Physical

Most states require that students participating in school sports receive a sports physical and be cleared to play. A sports physical can identify any potential health issues or conditions that may pose a risk during sports participation. It also allows health care providers to educate athletes and their guardians about injury prevention, proper nutrition and overall wellness.

  • Medical History

We'll discuss your athlete's medical history, including immunization status, to identify any factors that may affect their ability to engage in rigorous physical activity. This thorough review helps us develop tailored health care plans and ensure it's safe for them to participate in athletics.

  • Physical Exam

The provider will take your child’s vital signs, like their heart rate, blood pressure and respiratory rate. They’ll examine their joints and musculoskeletal health and test their reflexes. They’ll also recommend any necessary screenings, such as vision and hearing tests, as well as an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) to check their heart health.

  • Lifestyle Education

During the appointment, the provider will discuss with you and your child how to build a foundation of health for athletes. This conversation allows us to identify important lifestyle habits, like nutrition, sleep and stress management, all of which can impact athletic performance.

A New Layer of Protection for Student Athletes

A sports physical exam is a chance to protect your student athlete's health and catch concerns early.

If your high school student plans to play school sports this year, they'll need an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) to participate. An EKG is a quick, noninvasive screening that records the heart's electrical activity and can help identify any hidden heart conditions. Florida's "Second Chance Act" now requires high school athletes to be cleared by an EKG before play.

Talk to your urgent care provider about whether your child needs an EKG during their sports physical.

At AdventHealth Centra Care, we're your one-stop spot for required physicals and screenings with compassionate, whole-person care, so your child can get back to the activities they love.
